Dharma wheels architectural panel 欄間 (ranma)

Price on request

A spectacular and highly refined carved wooden architectural panel 欄間 (ranma), originally made for a Buddhist temple.

The openwork carving is centred by three prominent Dharma wheels 法輪 (hôrin), each worked as a complex circular rosette with a lotus-like centre and radiating spokes. The wheels are surrounded by deeply carved, scrolling clouds 雲 (kumo), arranged in a dense and rhythmic composition across the entire panel. The carving is executed in several layers, creating considerable depth.

The panel is set within a black lacquered wooden frame, finished with a narrow gold-lacquered inner border. The dark brown surface of the carving has developed an attractive aged patina.
The Dharma wheel 法輪 (hôrin) is one of the principal symbols of Buddhism, representing the teachings of the Buddha and the spreading of the Buddhist doctrine. Its use here, together with the surrounding clouds, strongly reflects the panel’s original religious setting.
