Celestial maiden architectural panel 欄間 (ranma)
Price on request
A striking carved and gilded wooden architectural panel 欄間 (ranma), originally made for a Buddhist temple, depicting a celestial maiden 天人 (tennin) floating amongst dense scrolling clouds.
The tennin is shown in a graceful flying pose, her long scarves and robes sweeping around her body as if carried by the wind. Her hands are positioned as though playing a transverse flute, although the instrument itself is no longer present. The figure is surrounded by deeply carved and rhythmically arranged clouds 雲 (kumo), filling the openwork composition from end to end.
The entire carved scene is finished in gold, set within a black lacquered wooden frame with stepped, lobed corners.
Tennin are celestial beings in Buddhist imagery, closely related to apsaras in Indian Buddhist art.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period)
Dimensions:
Width 178.8 cm; Height 44.5 cm; Depth 10 cm.
Considering its age, the ranma is in good heavily restored condition with traces of wear, losses and repairs to the carving and gilding. The flute originally held by the tennin is no longer present. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
