Two-panel golden folding screen

Price: € 1.350,00

A tall two-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) entirely covered in lustrous gold leaf, featuring a subtle square pattern.
A very rare feature of this screen is that the back-side is completely covered by oxidized silver leaf. Silver leaf continuously undergoes the process of oxidation, which creates a beautiful aged patina.

In Japan, such serene and understated screens are traditionally used as elegant backdrops for displaying vases with ikebana 生け花 (flower arrangements) or other decorative and ceremonial objects.

The screen is set within a wooden frame lacquered in a red-and-black negoro’nuri 根来塗 style.

Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926)
Dimensions: Total width 174.4 cm (2 × 87.2 cm); Height 175.4 cm

In a very good restored condition with some traces of wear consistent with age on both sides, like a restored patch at the reverse. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.

When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
