A great wooden temple lantern 行灯 (andon) of kakugata 角形 (square) type, displaying a refined blend of traditional craftsmanship and early Art Nouveau influences.

The lantern is constructed with a dark brown wood frame, enriched with intricately carved corner brackets and decorative horizontal rails carved with floral motifs. The rectangular body is lined with antique paper panels made from pages of a book, covered in flowing cursive script.
The paper panels on all four sides are removable for access to the interior.

The upper section is supported by square pillars and fitted with a carrying handle on top. It rests on a square base raised by low bracket feet.

Complete with two ceramic oil saucers, one with a loss to the rim. When illuminated, the aged paper emits a soft, warm glow that beautifully enhances the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese interior.
