Buddhist shrine deity protector of children

Price: € 1.800,00

A red lacquer zushi 厨子 (portable Buddhist shrine) housing a finely carved wooden figure of Kariteimo 訶利帝母, also known as Kishimojin 鬼子母神.

The figure is carved from palm wood with finely gilded details and depicts the deity standing upon a rocky pedestal. She is dressed in flowing Song dynasty-style robes and holds a pomegranate 石榴 (zakuro) in her right hand, while cradling a child in her left arm. A circular halo with three wish-granting jewel宝珠 (hôju) appliqués frames her head. The pedestal is decorated with an openwork cartouche carved with a pomegranate motif, symbolising fertility and abundance.

Originally a child-stealing demoness in Buddhist tradition, Kariteimo was converted by the Buddha and became a compassionate protector of children, motherhood, fertility and safe childbirth. She is particularly venerated in Japanese Buddhism, especially within the Nichiren and Shingon traditions.

The interior of the zushi is finished in gold leaf, while the exterior is coated in vibrant red lacquer and fitted with gilt copper mounts decorated with scrolling motifs. The shrine has developed an attractive warm patina through age and use.
