An extreme ply rare, and very large portable shrine 厨子 (zushi) housing a finely carved and gilded wooden figure of Jizô Bosatsu 地蔵菩薩.
Jizô is seated in lalitâsana upon a lotus throne, his pendant left foot resting on a smaller lotus support. He holds a pilgrim’s staff 錫杖 (shakujô) in his right hand and a wish-fulfilling jewel 宝珠 (hôju) in his left. The figure is dressed in flowing monastic robes, richly gilded and decorated with finely incised brocade patterns. Across the chest hangs an elaborate openwork metal necklace set with numerous coloured glass beads.
The serene face is finished with downcast glass-inlaid eyes and a glass-inlaid white curl 白毫 (byakugô) at the forehead. Behind the figure is an elaborate gilt openwork halo 光背 (kôhai), carved with dense scrolling cloud forms and further jewel motifs.
The figure rests upon a highly elaborate multi-tiered pedestal. The upper section is formed as a rocky outcrop and a double-lotus throne, surrounded by openwork gilt railings decorated with birds and flowers. Below are further carved and gilded tiers with geometric ornament, floral motifs and a prominent lower band of swirling clouds.
The interior of the shrine is finished in gold lacquer, while the exterior is lacquered in a deep dark-brown tone. The doors and central closing strip are fitted with extensive engraved and pierced brass hardware with scrolling foliate decoration.
Jizô Bosatsu 地蔵菩薩 has been widely worshipped in Japan since the Heian period and became especially important as a compassionate protector of children, travellers and the deceased. In Buddhist belief, Jizô is understood to move freely through the six realms of existence 六道 (rokudô), offering aid to beings who have not yet attained enlightenment.
