Superb tall six-panel byôbu flowering autumn plants

Price: € 2.700,00

A superb tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a refined painting of an arrangement of flowering autumn plants against a luminous gold leaf ground.

The composition is concentrated along the lower register, where a naturalistic border of flowering plants unfolds across the width of the screen. Among the richly varied vegetation are blooming peonies 牡丹 (botan), Chinese bellflowers 桔梗 (kikyô), tiger lilies 鬼百合 (oniyuri), red poppies, orchids 蘭 (ran), horsetail 杉菜 (tsukushi), and a variety of seasonal grasses and wildflowers.

Rendered with exceptionally delicate brushwork and subtle colouring, the plants emerge gracefully from the lower edge, while the expansive gold leaf background above creates a striking sense of openness and tranquillity.

Executed in colour and ink on gold leaf. The painting is bordered by matching brownish-gold silk brocade trims and set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware.

Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868–1912)
Dimensions:
Total width: 378.4 cm (2 × 64.4 cm, 4 × 62.4 cm); Height: 172.8 cm.

The screen is in very good restored condition, with wear consistent with age on both sides. The reverse shows paper restorations and reinforced hinges. There is a restored section of gold leaf around the central hinge, and minor localised bubbling to the left side, a common characteristic of antique folding screens. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference.

The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall as a decorative work of art, but can also be displayed as a standalone piece.

When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
