Beautiful globular wickerwork bamboo ikebana flower basket 花籠 (hanakago) with a fixed loop handle with a lovey reddish brown patina, by the famous basket maker Wada Waichisai III 三代和田和一斎 (1899-1975).
The body is intricately woven with thin susutake 煤竹 (‘smoked bamboo’) bamboo strips using different types of plating. The body is woven in a criss-cross open worked fashion with dense horizontal lines.
Including a separate bamboo segment vase with a red lacquer finish. This cylindrical container can be used for flower arrangements.
Signed at the bottom ‘Wa’ichisai’. Wada Waichisai III was born in Osaka as a son of Wada Waichisai II. In 1911 he started to learn bamboo craft under his father. At his private exhibition in Tokyo held in 1927, his work was purchased by a kuge (court noble). He inherited “Wada Waichisai III” in 1933 when his father passed way.
The basket and vase are in very good condition. The vase with minimal traces of age. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
