Arita trumpet shaped vase by Kumagae Koho
Price: € 600,00
A very large and impressive blue-and-white porcelain trumpet-shaped vase attributed to Kumagae Kôho 熊谷光甫 (1949–), the fifteenth-generation potter of the Kumagae family associated with Ueno ware 上野焼 (Agano-yaki) in Fukuoka Prefecture.
The vase has a broad flaring mouth above a gently tapering cylindrical body and is decorated in underglaze blue with stylised paulownia leaves and flowers 桐 (kiri), accompanied by phoenixes 鳳凰 (hôô) amongst trailing cloud-like forms. The decoration is executed in several shades of blue against a white porcelain ground, with the design continuing around the exterior and onto the inner rim.
According to legend, the ho-o bird will only nest in paulownia trees, and only in peacetime and when a virtuous ruler is in power. With hopes of attracting the auspicious birds, the trees are planted in courtyards and gardens across Japan.
Kumagae Kôho 熊谷光甫 is a member of the Japan Kôgei Association 日本工芸会 (Nihon Kôgeikai) and represents the fifteenth generation of the Kumagae pottery lineage.
