Beautiful Wajima’ware robuchi 炉縁 (sunken hearth frame) decorated with golden takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer design) of stylized pine trees 松 (matsu) on a black lacquer ground. The trunks of the pine tree with inlaid kirigane 切金 (cut and inlaid pieces of gold leaf). The outside and bottom side lacquered dark red.
A robuchi is a frame placed in a sunken hearth 炉 (ro) that are installed into the floor of a tea ceremony room to make a charcoal fire.

The frame is quite heavy, indicating the wood used is of a high hard wood quality.
Wajima lacquerware (called Wajima’nuri 輪島塗り in Japanese) is made in the city of Wajima, Ishikawa prefecture. The most notable features of Wajima lacquerware are not only its beautiful finish but also the high quality powder used for its production called jinoko (powdered diatomaceous soil), which can be found only in Wajima. Because of the use of jinoko as an undercoat, the lacquerware’s high durability is ensured. (From Kogeijapan)
