Red lacquered temple lantern 行灯 (andon)
Price: € 900,00
An exceptionally shaped Japanese red lacquered temple lantern 行灯 (andon) of hexagonal form 六角形 (rokkakugata).
The hexagonal shade is constructed with delicate wooden slats and fitted at the front with a hinged latticework door. The panels are covered with translucent Japanese paper 和紙 (washi), decorated with a subtle repeating floral pattern.
The upper section is supported by four slender square pillars above a tiered hexagonal base, all finished in vibrant red lacquer. A small drawer at the front would traditionally have been used for storing matches or other lighting essentials.
Complete with a porcelain oil saucer fitted with a crane-shaped metal wick holder. When illuminated, the aged paper produces a soft, warm light, particularly suited to a traditional Japanese interior.
Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926).
Dimensions:
Height: 78.5 cm, Width: 34.5 cm, Depth: 34.5 cm.
Considering its age, the lantern is in very good condition. The fragile original paper panels show foxing and expected traces of age. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
