Large foldable brass and rice paper lantern

High quality large foldable chôchin 提灯 (Japanese paper lantern) with black lacquer 蝋色漆 (roiro’urushi) casings

The very thin paper is inscribed with three kanji (Chinese characters), reading ‘Eishôan’ 栄昌庵. Which could have been the name of a temple.

Both casings are equipped with shaped open work brass mountings depicting ferocious dragons. The upper part has a handle ending in stylized pine trees. Beneath which, a double hinged lid and an opening. The lower casing with an elaborate and beautiful lotus flower shaped ornament hanging at the bottom, next to a similar opening as the top.

The chôchin is in a good condition with some traces of age, wear and old repairs. Please take a close look at an defect at the bottom. For a general condition reference, please look at the photos as well for a clear impression.

Please be very careful when you hang up this lantern. The inside is supported by metal chains, but still the paper is very fragile while unfolding.
