A wonderful Japanese uchikake 打ち掛け (wedding kimono), ‘new old stock’.

This uchikake is made from overwhelming red brocade silk and has been embroidered with a stunning design of Japanese gold pheasants amidst a great variety of foliage, like chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku), cherry blossoms 桜 (sakura) and bamboo leaves 竹 (take).

The designs are executed in all different shades of white, gold, silver and green.

The lining is made of orange brocade silk. The thick border at the bottom of the kimono is filled with cotton.

In Japan, pheasants symbolizes power, promises, and abundance to come.

This exquisite work of textile art can either be hung on your wall or worn to a party. It is in a fantastic condition!

Uchikake is a highly formal kimono worn only by a bride or at a stage performance. The uchikake is often heavily brocaded and is supposed to be worn outside the actual kimono and obi, as a sort of coat.
