Exceptional high quality antique gold and black lacquered wooden clothing rack 衣桁 (ikô), mostly used for official displaying kimono.
The body of the rectangular detachable frame decorated with a covering design of a rare crest 紋 (mon) shaped like a pair of nestled circles with a line going through, connected by scrolling karakusa (vines) rendered in gold hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer). The mon could be interpreted as an target struck by an arrow.
The endings of the poles with shaped brass fittings engraved with the same crest and scrolling foliage design.
Ikô equipped with such exquisite hardware were mainly used in Buddhist temples.
The ikô is in a very good condition with negligible traces of wear consistent with age and use, like some lacquer loss along the rims, and old restorations. One hardware ring of the feet missing. Please look at the photos for a clear condition reference.
