Superb lacquered wooden clothing rack 衣桁 (ikô), used for official displaying kimono.

The body of the rectangular detachable frame decorated with a repetitive design of crests 紋 (mon) depicting a “China flower” in a hexagonal “turtle” shell 亀甲に唐花 (Kikkô ni karabana). Rendered in golden hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) and nashiji 梨子地 (sprinkled gold lacquer).
The fitted gilt metal hardware richly engraved with scrolling foliage 唐草 (karakusa).

Ikô equipped with such exquisite hardware were mainly used in Buddhist temples.

Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926).

An ikô is a piece of interior furnishing documented to be used in Japan as early as the twelfth century. By the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries, lacquer clothing stands had become a conventional item included in the bridal trousseau of wealthy women.

The kimono shown in the picture is included in this lot.

This stand is all original and will be shipped in individual parts and is easy to put together. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
