Large Imari export porcelain teapot decorated with different polychrome scenes in panels.
The lid with three designs in cartouches, of: two auspicious attributes, a table with writing utensils, and a view on a jinmaku 陣幕 (camp enclosure curtain) with some flags in the background. The knob is in the shape of a berry with leaves.
The body of the teapot is decorated with three panel scenes as well: a gathering of three samurai in full armour, a reading bijin 美人 (beautiful woman) and an samurai in full armour holding a bow, the god Fukurokuju 福禄寿 surrounded by different scholars.
A intriguing detail of this teapot is that the scenes of the body correspond with those on the lid.
The bottom is signed by the artist: “Hichōzan Shinpo’ zō” 肥蝶山信甫造, which is the signature of the artist Tashiro Monzaemon 田代紋左衛門 (1817-1900).
Except a small rim chip with a corresponding hairline (approx. 2 cm) the teapot is in a very good condition.
