High-quality samurai doll 武者人形
Price: € 420,00
A high-quality samurai doll 武者人形 (musha ningyô) portraying the esteemed warrior Minamoto no Yoshiie 源義家 (1039–1106), seated proudly upon a traditional shôgi 床几 (samurai folding stool).
Clad in a richly detailed golden suit of yoroi (armour) worn over a multicoloured brocade silk kimono adorned with floral motifs, the doll exudes noble presence. His expressive face is finely modelled with hand-painted features and inlaid glass eyes. The soft peach-toned complexion is achieved through multiple layers of gofun 胡粉, a refined white pigment made from powdered itabo oyster shells (Ostrea denselamellosa). He wears an impressive kabuto (helmet) crowned with a golden dragon maedate (crest). At his side rests a large tachi (long sword), and on his back a quiver filled with five arrows.
Minamoto no Yoshiie was a renowned military commander of the late Heian period, celebrated for his role in the Early Nine Years’ War (Zenkunen no Eki) and the Later Three Years’ War (Gosannen no Eki). Revered as a paragon of martial prowess and strategic brilliance, he became a legendary figure in Japanese warrior culture and a model for later generations of samurai.
