Globular chôzubachi 手水鉢 (water basin)
Price: € 420,00
An attractive granite chôzubachi 手水鉢 (water basin) of globular form.
Carved from a single block of black-speckled grey granite, the basin has a near-spherical body with a broad circular opening and a thick rounded rim. The surface has been finished with a finely textured dressing. Although simple in design, its unusually globular form is one that is seldom encountered.
Period: Japan – Shôwa period (1926–1989).
Dimensions: Height: 29 cm; Diameter: 42 cm.
The basin is in very good condition, with minimal signs consistent with age and outdoor use. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
Traditionally, a chôzubachi 手水鉢 was used in Japanese gardens and temple precincts as a basin for ritual purification before entering a sacred space or participating in a tea ceremony.
