Large Yukimi Gata Ishidōrō (雪見型石灯籠) old snow lantern in 5 parts.
The individual parts are described as follows:
The bottom-most piece, touching the ground, represents chi, the earth and represents sui, or water.
Ka or fire, is represented by the section encasing the lantern’s light or flame.
Fū (air) and kū (void or spirit) are represented by the last two sections, top-most and pointing towards the sky.
The Yukimi Gata Ishidōrō (雪見型石灯籠) is the most well-known lantern that is relatively close to the ground. Yukimi is Japanese for “seeing snow”. This name was based on the fact that the Kasa (傘) or umbrella of the lantern can be covered with snow during the cold winter days (from: Yokoso Japanese Gardens).
The age of these lanterns is difficult to determine. We think that is 60 – 100 years old (Taisho – Showa period). This snow lantern has a soft outline and shows visible impact of being outside and the influence of weather elements for many many year. Please see pictures.
