Interesting, large and heavy traditional Japanese chôzu’bachi 手水鉢 (water basin) made from a large natural stone of granite which is in a soft ecru hue. This type is known as shizen’seki 自然石 (natural stone). It is characterised for its rustic natural appearance. Like a stone, as they occur in nature, but with a water reservoir built into it.
Chôzu’bachi is an ornament with a water reservoir commonly found in traditional Japanese gardens. Used for ritual hand washing and mouth cleansing before a person is allowed to participate in the tea ceremony or enter sacred ground such as a Buddhist temple or Shinto shrine. Chôzubachi freely translated means water reservoir for the hands. (From: Yokoso Japanese Gardens)

Height 35 cm, Width 61 cm, Depth 39 cm.
The inner basin has a diameter of 18 cm and is 7.5 cm deep.
In a very good original condition with a chip (as seen on the photo) from the rim of the basin. Please look at the photos as well for a clear condition reference.
The age of this ornament is difficult to determine. We think that this one is 60 – 100 years old (Taishô-Shôwa period).
Shipping of this water bassin is relatively easy. We will use a wooden pallet and good packing for safe transport.
When shipped we will also add a certificate of authenticity.
