The age of such a stone item is difficult to determine. We think that this one is 60 – 100 years old (Taishô – Shôwa period). Forming an appealing outdoorsy patina by being placed outside for several years. It is in a good original condition with an old repair of the frogs right leg. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
The frog (kaeru) is a symbol of fertility and good fortune in Japan, and because the phrase in Japanese means “to return,” frogs can be associated with things/people returning to their place of origin. They are lucky to have around because frogs promise good fortune and companions (which will eventually return) and are carried by travellers to ensure they return safely from their journeys.
