Beautiful “underwater” painting on silk by 島田柏樹 Shimada Hakuju (1893-1958), depicting a circling group of fish painted in nice subtle soft yellow and light blue shades. These are called “Ayu” fish in Japan, for which there is no good synonymous name outside Japan.
Mounted on a silk blue- grey matching border with a floral design. Early Showa-period.
Shimada Hakuju was a student of Hyakuho Hirafuku, and had several national exhibitions with his artwork.

In very good original condition and in original signed wooden box.
