Vibrant medium-sized 4-panel byôbu

Remarkable medium-sized four-panel byôbu 屏風 (room divider) with a vibrant painting on oxidized silver leaf depicting a rich flower garden near a winding river. The scene is after a famous design known as “Summer and autumn flower plants” by Sakai Hoitsu, which was painted on the back of the renowned “Wind and Thunder God”-screens. This painting is a fantastic modernist version of that with lots of wonderful overflowing colours.

The luscious flower field is filled with all sorts of different plants, like grape leaves 葡萄 (budô) and tall pampas grasses 薄 (susuki) blown in a strong wind, pink and blue morning glory-flowers 朝顔 (asagao), and some pink lilies 百合 (yuri) hidden behind the grass blades.

This colourful painting is set on silver leaf. Silver leaf continuously undergoes the process of oxidation, which creates a beautiful aged patina.

Sealed in the lower left corner with ‘Tôya’ と～や and dating this screen 1991 (Heisei-period).

It is in a very good original condition with some traces of age and wear. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.

This room divider is very suitable to be mounted flat on a wall and be presented as one piece of art.
