The Tale of Genji 源氏物語 screen

Price:  4.800,00

An exceptional and detailed large six-panel byôbu 屏風 (room divider) with a painting on gold- and silver leaf of a large group of noblemen, officials, monks and warriors accompanied by some beautiful women in traditional Heian attire.
It depicts a scene from ‘The Tale of Genji’ 源氏物語 (Genji Monogatari). Unfortunately the specific scene is unknown, but it shows a bustling and elegant group of people in deep conversation where a lot is to be seen; each is wearing a distinct kimono, some holding up a fan, others brought their bow and arrow-filled quiver, and it is clear that the women are the centre of attention of most gentlemen.

The figures are painted very detailed and are set on an oxidized silver leaf background. Silver leaf continuously undergoes the process of oxidation, which creates a beautiful aged patina.

The scene is surrounded by dense gold leaf clouds with a rim of dome-shaped circles.

The panels are mounted with two silk borders, a thin black brocade one, and a wide navy blue and white one. The folding screen is protected by a black lacquer wooden frame with its original hardware.

Considering its age the byôbu is in a very good condition with some minor traces of age, wear and old restorations. Please check the photos for a condition reference.
Meiji-period – End 19th century.
Total width: 378.4 cm (2 x 64.4 and 4 x 62.4 cm); Height: 171.5 cm.
