Screen with pine tree forest
Price: € 3.300,00
Exquisite and large six-panel byôbu 屏風 (room divider) with a painting on gold-leaf of a pine tree forest along the shore of a winding rocky river. The evergreen pine trees are symbols of a long life. The serene scene is surrounded by dense gold-leaf clouds. The river is executed in a nice deep blue color. The gold-leaf background is of a warm quality and will present beautifully in a softly glowing manner. There are multiple old repairs in gold-leaf background. Please check pictures.
The panels are mounted by two silk borders, a thin blue brocade one, and a broad dark red brocade one. Protected by a black lacquer wooden frame with its original hardware.
The back with a label, reading: “Jidai ô’byôbu (Momoyama jidai)” 時代御屏風（桃山時代), meaning “Antique great folding screen (Momoyama period)”. Although the written sign claims that this piece was made in the Momoyama period we do not think this is the case. We think it was painted in the Late Edo period – First half of the 19 th. century.
Total width: 348.0 cm (2 x 59.6 and 4 x 57.2 cm); Height: 171.7 cm.
Considering its age it is in a very good condition with traces of age, wear and old restorations. A considerable feat, seen its impressive ascribed age of approx. 420-450 years (!). Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
This room divider is light in weight and can also be easily mounted flat on a wall and presented as one piece of art.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
