An elegant large two-panel byôbu 屏風 (room divider) with a Rinpa School-style image of a white and red blooming plum tree 梅 (ume) executed in coloured washi-paper in relief. Heightened by some gold leaf details along the branches and in the flower hearts.
Sealed in the lower left corner by the artist: Ichiji/Isshi/Kazuyuki 一之.
Protected by a black lacquer frame with its original hardware.
Plum blossoms bloom at the end of the winter, and with this, they are called the herald of spring. They symbolize perseverance because of how they can possibly bloom during the cold winter. Since they are considered the first flower of the year, they also represent purity and renewal.
Plum blossoms have been long considered a ward against evil spirits. It is a famous garden tree, and you will find these trees standing guard in the northeast corner (the direction from which evil is believed to come) of many estate buildings and temples.
The screen is in a very good condition with minimal traces of age. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
