Large six-panel byôbu 屏風

Price:  1.650,00

An attractive and “quiet” large six-panel byôbu 屏風 (room divider) with a refined painting of an islet with a large pine tree 松 (matsu), surrounded by a vast and wild sea. The waves crash against the land and splash up high. Above the sea fly three blue Japanese birds 四十雀 (shijûkara) towards the safety of the branches of the tree.
Surrounding this scene large tranquil spaces which creates an unexpected serenity in such a wild display.

This multicolored painting is made on an oxidized silver leaf background with a translucent gold shimmer.
Silver leaf continuously undergoes the process of oxidation, which creates a beautiful aged patina.

Mounted by two silk borders, a thin black brocade golden one, and a broad brown brocade one. Protected by a black lacquer frame with its original hardware.

In a very good condition with some minor traces of age, wear and old restorations. One panel somewhat warped. Please please look at the photos for a condition reference.

Total width: 377 cm (2 x 64,5 cm, 4 x 62 cm); Height: 170,8 cm.
