Large 2-panel byôbu with a flower garden, by Oki Ganrei 沖冠嶺

A colourful large two-panel byôbu 屏風 (room divider) with a painting of a vibrant painting of a rich flower garden.
Around a rustic rock blooms a garden filled with all sorts of different flowers, like a slanting cherry blossomg tree 桜 (sakura), purple and pink peonies 牡丹 (botan), a red red star lily’s カノコユリ (kanokoyuri) and blue irises 花菖蒲 (hanashôbu).
Various small birds are scurrying around among all this vegetation.

The multi-coloured painting is set on paper. It is protected by a black lacquer wooden frame with its original hardware.

Signature and seal in the lower right corner both read: ‘Ganrei’, which is the Nihonga-painter Oki Ganrei 沖冠嶺; eldest son of the painter Oki Gangaku 沖冠岳 (1817-1876).

The screen is in a very good condition with minimal traces of age and wear. Please look at the photo of an old restoration of the hinges at the back. For a clear condition reference please look at the photos as well.

Period: Japan – Late Meiji period – Taishô period (First quarter 20th century).

This room divider is light in weight and can also be easily mounted flat on a wall and presented as one piece of art.
