A captivating medium-size six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a refined continuous Kanô School-style painting of a fenced garden with a pond.
Behind the gold leaf bamboo gate is a large plum tree 梅 (ume) with bending, twisting branches sprouting white blossoms, which convey the atmosphere of a cold early spring morning and symbolize birth and renewal. Some long bamboo stalks can also be seen through the branches.
All kinds of birds reside in this garden, sparrows 雀 (suzume) fly around playfully, and in the pond next to the irises 菖蒲 (hanashôbu) a few mandarin ducks 鴛鴦 (oshidori) swim peacefully.
The polychrome scene is painted on paper, where the bamboo fence is executed in gold leaf, and the image is surrounded by green and gold mottled clouds.
The panels are surrounded by two silk borders, a thin white brocade one, and a wide brown brocade one with a geometrical flower design. The screen is protected by a black lacquer wooden frame with its original hardware.
Considering the age, which is approximately 170-220 years old (and maybe even older!), the byôbu is in a good restored condition. It has traces of age, wear and restorations. Please take a close look at the photos of the restored paper on the back-side. For a clear condition reference, please look at the pictures as well. The screen can’t be placed flat on the wall, because the hinges are fragile.

The Kanô school (狩野派, Kanô-ha) is one of the most famous schools of Japanese painting. The Kanō school of painting was the dominant style of painting from the late 15th century until the Meiji period which began in 1868, by which time the school had divided into many different branches. The school began by reflecting a renewed influence from Chinese painting, but developed a brightly coloured and firmly outlined style for large panels decorating the castles of the nobility which reflected distinctively Japanese traditions, while continuing to produce monochrome brush paintings in Chinese styles.
