Six panel landscape screen

Price: € 1.300,00

A lively six-panel byōbu depicting a bustling rural landscape, painted in ink and mineral pigments on a gold-leaf ground with large, stylised hils in the back.

The continuous composition unfolds across the six panels, revealing thatched farmhouses with open interiors, blossoming plum trees and pines, rice fields, winding paths and expanses of dark, patterned water. Travellers and villagers in traditional dress animate the landscape, walking in groups, carrying loads and gathering around the houses. A woman dressed in red appears in a doorway and again along a hillside path.
White plum blossom and sweeping areas of gold mist connect the individual scenes.

The subject belongs to the tradition of fūzokuga, or genre painting, depicting scenes of everyday life and the activities of ordinary people. Painted in a colourful and lively manner, with strong outlines and broad areas of colour, the screen combines narrative detail with a distinctly decorative character.

Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (second half 19th century).
Dimensions: Total width 370; Height 172 cm.

Considering its age, the screen is in good condition with traces of wear consistent with age on both sides. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.

The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can also be displayed as a standalone piece.
