Low folding screen

Price: € 480,00

A fine furosaki byôbu 風炉先屏風 (tea ceremony folding screen), featuring a painting of an elegant pavilion overlooking a landscaped garden.

Shown is an establishment which over leisure pastimes within the open pavilion, several intimate scenes unfold. In the foreground, two gentlemen are engaged in a game of go, while female attendants serve tea. A gentleman seated on the veranda quietly smokes a kiseru pipe. Further inside, guests enjoy sake, while in the upper room a lady performs on the shamisen for a small gathering.

The adjoining garden is planted with blossoming cherry blossoms 桜 (sakura) and flowering camellia 椿 (tsubaki), interspersed with ornamental rocks, shaped pines and a tranquil pond. Beside the water stands a lit ishi’dôrô 石灯籠 (stone lantern), while scattered flakes of gold leaf across the sky evoke the atmosphere of early evening.

Signed and sealed in the lower left corner.

Executed in colour and ink on mulberry paper with scattered gold leaf. The painting is bordered by a patterned silk brocade trim and set within a black lacquered wooden frame.

Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912–1926).

Dimensions:
Total width 175 cm (2 × 87.5 cm); Height 72.6 cm.

Considering its age, the screen is in fair condition, with wear consistent with age and use. There are losses to the paper and silk mounting, numerous abrasions and rubbing wear, old restorations and touch-ups throughout, scattered losses to the gold leaf, and a restrengthened central hinge. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.

The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can of course also be placed as a standalone piece.
