Gold lacquered ô’yoroi

Gold lacquered ô’yoroi (great suit-of-armour) with navy blue, white and purple cords and a purple hem (kin’urushinuri iroiro’ito murasaki’suso nimaidô tôsei gusoku).

The ô’yoroi has a nice black lacquered iron sixty-two (!) plate suji’kabuto-helmet. In front a striking golden metal maedate in the shape of a slightly tilted crescent moon. Its heart-shaped visor (mabi’sashi) is flanked by two small gold lacquered fukikaeshi (face guards). The helmet has three gold lacquered neck-guards (shikoro) laced with white and purple cords. On top a chrysanthemum-shaped hachimanza 八幡座 (small opening on top) with a high raised stem. At the back of the helmet a crimson silk tassel.

Accompanying the helmet, is an ‘angry looking old man’-facial mask (resseibô) which is lacquered brown with a rough texture wherein they applied some smooth facial lines. It has a grey moustache, a wide open n-shaped mouth, and a pair of protruding otayori (helmet cord securing spike). The back is lacquered red.
Beneath the half-mask a gold lacquered three-piece gorget (yodarekake) laced with cords in the same colour-scheme as the helmet.

Protecting the shoulders is a slightly arched eight-piece gold lacquered metal tôsei’sode laced with similar coloured cords. The upright edge at the top is covered by white decorative ‘smoked leather’.

The arms are protected by small gold lacquer vertical metal pieces connected by Japanese black mail over a black silk with a colourful chrysanthemum motif (koshino’kote). At the elbow a protective plate in the shape of a chrysanthemum. Different flower-emblems in low relief decorate the hand guards (tekko).

The two-piece bucket shaped cuirass with horizontal gold lacquer kiritsuke kozane-plates (kiritsuke kozane nimai’dô) laced with navy blue cords. In front it has two rings with vermillion silk tassels and is bordered with the same white ‘smoked leather’.
From the shoulders down hang a matching sendannoita (‘satinwood-board’) and a kyûbinoita (dovetail-board).
The back with a larger ring with a faceted knob and open work chrysanthemum decorated back plate, from which hangs a large vermillion tassel. The cuirass has a well-made shaped back slightly bending inward in the middle. It is lined with a different light brown ‘smoked leather’ with a temple lion design (shishi).
From the cuirass hangs a laced skirt in seven-parts of five-piece gold lacquer kusazuri laced with purple and white cords. Around the waist a brocade silk waistband (uwa’obi) in shades of orange and green with a lush chrysanthemum and butterfly design.

The haidate that protect the upper legs consists of laced gold lacquer metal karuta-plates bordered by a similar brocade and ‘smoked leather’.

The suneate that protect the lower legs consist of gold lacquered vertical metal pieces (shino’suneate) connected with Japanese mail over a tateage made of the same chrysanthemum silk.

The dark brown ‘boar’-skin kegutsu (fur shoes) with a ‘smoked leather’ tab in front, a brown brocade border with a green hem, and vermillion cord.

Including rectangular black lacquered store-box for a suit-of armour (yoroi’bako) with fitted golden metal hardware decorated with scrolling folliage. The front of the store-box decorated with the character mae 前 (“in front”) in gold. The Kanji “Mae” meaning “the first”; in other words: “I, who has priority above others”.

In very good condition with some traces of age and wear. Please take a close look at a repair of the meadate. For a clear condition reference, please view the photos as well.
