Black lacquered suit-of-armour

 A Japanese black lacquered suit-of-armour (yoroi) with purple cords and a two-piece cuirass (kuro’urushinuri murakashi’ito odoshi nimaidô gusoku).

With a nice ten plate hoshikabuto-helmet. In front a pair of kuwagata-antlers with in the middle a gilded round maedate. The helmet has two neck-guards (shikoro) with purple cords and a orange hem (suso). Decorative ‘smoked leather’ covers its large back-bending fukikaeshi. At the back of the helmet an orange tassel.

Accompanying the helmet, is a black lacquered ‘angry man’-facial mask (resseibô) with a black moustache and a partially gilded black lacquered four-piece gorget (nodawa).

Protecting the shoulders is a six-piece partially gilded black lacquered metal sode with purple cords and an orange hem, with from the sides down an orange cord with tassels. The arms are protected by black lacquered vertical metal pieces over a white coloured brocade with a flower pattern (shinokote).

The two-piece bucket-shaped cuirass with vertical laced partially gilded black lacquered metal itazane-plates (tatehagi okegawa nimaidō) is bordered with a similar ‘smoked leather‘ and has two orange tassels. From the cuirass hangs a skirt in six-parts of five-piece kusazuri.

A haidate with laced partially gilded black lacquered oblong metal karuta-pieces over brocade (similar brocade as the kote) protect the upper legs. The tube-shaped suneate that protect the lower legs have vertical laced black lacquered metal pieces (dosuneate).

With a brown waist-band (uwa’obi) (partially discoloured), and a square black lacquered store-box for a suit-of armour (yoroibako). The front of the store-box decorated with the character mae (“in front”) in gold. The Kanji “Mae” meaning “the first”; in other words: “I, who has priority above others”.

In very good condition with some light traces of age. Showa period.
