Set of two antique samurai dolls 武者人形 (Musha ningyô) featuring nobly portrayed figures from the samurai class. Together with a large arrow stand.

The centerpiece doll represents Emperor Ôjin 応神天皇 (Ôjin Tenpô) in seated position. He wears a richly detailed gold yoroi (armor) over a silk brown kimono. He is holding a fan and at his side he keeps a short sword. A high ‘courtier hat’ adorns his head.
Emperor Ôjin features are meticulously crafted and his noble white skin achieved through multiple applications of gofun 胡粉, a fine white pigment made from the powdered shell of the itabo oyster (Ostrea denselamellosa).

Accompanying him is a kneeling samurai retainer, dressed in a silk brocade outfit with armour elements, though his attire and facial expression are slightly less regal. He wears a jingasa -travellers hat – and holds a banner.

The wooden arrow stand is foldable and holds 13 arrows.

Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century).
