Exquisite pair of black lacquered iron swan-like shaped abumi 鐙 (stirrups) with a large golden maki-e crest 紋 (mon) depicting a carriage wheel 源氏車 (Genji’guruma). This crest refers to the wheel of the Heian-period ox-drawn carriage from the classic ‘The Tale of Genji’ 源氏物語 (Genji Monogatari).
The interior of the stirrups are lacquered crimson with traces of gilded rims.

Height 26 cm, Width 14.1 cm, Depth 30 cm.
Edo Period (1600-1868).
Considering their age they are in a good condition with clear traces of age and wear along the rims. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.

Abumi (鐙), Japanese stirrups, were used in Japan as early as the 5th century, and were a necessary component along with the Japanese saddle (kura) for the use of horses in warfare. Abumi became the type of stirrup used by the samurai class of feudal Japan (From Wikipedia).
