Attractive black lacquer jingasa 陣笠 (ancient soldier’s hat) decorated with three gold lacquer maki-e (lacquer design) crests 紋 (mon) depicting three open fans 扇子 (sensu) joined together to form a circle. The hat is circular and flat of shape with a dome in the centre surmounted by a copper chrysanthemum-shaped 菊 (kiku) top.
The interior is lacquered with a vibrant even red layer featured with orange silk cords to keep the helmet in place.

Height 7 cm, Diameter 40 cm.

Period: Japan – Late Edo period/Early Meiji period (19th century).

Considering its age the helmet is in a fair original condition with traces of age and wear, like craquelé and rim chips. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
