Antique suji’bachi kabuto (helmet)

An antique, striking suji’bachi kabuto (helmet with ridges) surmounted by a maedate shaped like a pair of long arched kuwagata-antlers with serrated points along the sides. Connected at the center and adorned with domed rivets.

The 62-plate ‘russet iron’ bowl surmounted by a 5-tiered gilded and shibuichi tehen’no’kanamono (decorative apex fitting). The ‘russet iron’ visor (mabizashi) finished with a gilded copper trim with an engraved scrolling foliage design. Small outstanding fukigaeshi (face guards) adorned with a black lacquer finish.
The nicely curved four-lame ‘kiritsuke kozane’-plate shikoro (neck guard) lacquered black, the lower lame at the bottom with textured reddish brown lacquer to imitate leather. The lames are laced with navy blue silk cords.

Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (Second half 19th century). Maedate of more recent age.

Maedate: Length 31 cm, Width 25 cm.
Weight 2.4 kg.

Seen its age, approx. 125-175 years old, it is in a very good condition with some traces of wear consistent with age and restorations. Restoration of the point to mount a maedate, and of the left fukigaeshi. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
