32-plate suji’bachi kabuto (helmet)

Important and heavy black lacquered (kuro’urushinuri) thirty-two plate suji’bachi kabuto (helmet) with small fukugaeshi (face guard) finished with a gilded rim which is finely engraved with scrolling foliage. The bowl topped with an elaborate four-tiered tehen kanamono (top fixture) in gilt metal, and the base of the bowl encircled with a gilded decorative band. The mabizashi (visor) finished with the same elegant gilded rims, and mounted with an impressive large pair of connected kuwagata-antlers within between a separate round maedate (decorative front piece) with a cut-out moon crest (mamukitsuki’mon). The four-lame neck guards (shikoro) are laced with dark blue silk cords (kon’ito).

Period: Japan – Edo Period (1600-1868).
