A high quality & rare wooden bô’dansu 棒箪笥 (cabinet of drawers with a locking bar) in a single section. Fully restored, cleaned and waxed still having a good patina.
The cabinet is made of solid precious ‘Keyaki’ wood (Zelkova – Japanese oak), with the drawers faces made of burl wood of the same type with an intriguing swirling woodgrain. The cabinet is varnished in an appealing dark brown hue.
Configured with five drawers of different size protected by a vertical safety bar, and a pair of hinged doors revealing six more drawers.
The drawers are fitted with sturdy rectangular iron ‘kakute’ bail handles. The smooth running drawers are very deep and have a lot of volume, for easy storage. The decorative lock plate on the safety bar is heightened by a knob shaped like a raised chrysanthemum flower.
The sides with retractable iron “pole carrying”-handles for easy transport.
It is in a very good completely restored condition with some minor traces of age with a good patina. Please look at the photos for a condition reference. The safety bars mechanism is not lockable anymore, but can certainly be placed in its place as intentioned.
One key included, which works on the doors. It works in a traditional Japanese way, not very smooth.
Height 83.5 cm, Width 75.8 cm, Depth 38.6 cm.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period).
Tansu (箪笥) are traditional Japanese mobile storage cabinets. There are many different types of cabinets; form-wise, but also for the storage of many specific objects, like katana, documents, kimono etc. Starting as first recorded in the Genroku era (1688–1704) of the Edo period (1603–1867), tansu gradually became a feature of Japanese culture and daily life. Both hard and softwoods were used by tansuya (tansu craftsmen), often in combination for a single chest. This way the chests were still light enough for transport, while also housing precious (more heavy) wood types, like keyaki. Also features such as side handles, and being built up from several parts facilitated mobility of such an ingenious piece of furniture.
