Gourd-shaped ikebana flower basket 花籠 (hanakago)

Price:  180,00

Nice ikebana flower basket 花籠 (hanakago) crafted from susutake 煤竹 (‘smoked bamboo’), showcases a curved double gourd, elegantly resting on a lacquered rustic branch base. The placement gives the impression that the gourds are growing from the branch.

The intricate bamboo weaving features thin strips in various plaits, creating a dense pattern with some broader lines in between. The warm brown patina enhances the beauty of the bamboo.

The gourd 瓢箪 (hyôtan), is rich in symbolism in Japan, and was a charm for longevity, (as it is extremely durable when dried), good fortune, and for being symbolic of fertility, since it has numerous seeds.

With red painted tin container.

Period: Japan – Mid-Shôwa period (Mid-20th century).
