Large and amazing negoro’nuri-style 根来塗り red and black lacquer étagerè with a pair of long arched legs shaped like stylized elephant heads with elongated trunks. Raised by a circular reticulated galleried base.

In a very good condition. Old restoration to the attachment of one of the legs. Top surface with superficial traces of use. Completely cleaned giving a beautiful shiny finish to the lacquer. Please look at the photo for a condition reference.

Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926).

Negoro lacquerwares were produced at the Negoro-ji temple complex in Izumi province, produced during Japan’s medieval period, between the twelfth and seventeenth centuries. The red layers of lacquer on Negoro wares are intended to gradually wear away with use, revealing the black lacquer underneath (From Wikipedia).
