Heavy and beautiful wooden Dai used to display Okimono (ornament or object), or an ikebana basket with a flower arrangment.

This slice of mulberry hardwood is gradually becoming of darker color towards the center of this piece, and becoming thinner towards the edges.

The polished top makes the grain pop and all the more visible. Taisho – Showa-period.

This oval shaped piece can also be described as a so called burlwood.
A burl or burr is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner.

It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds (Wikipedia).

In nice original condition.
