High quality fully restored bright red urushi’nuri 漆塗り (lacquer) wooden paper-enclosed temple lantern 行灯 (andon) of the kakugata 角形-type. The square lampshade with canted corners and charming lattice work. It can be easily removed by sliding it up. It slides over the sides of the pair of columns that transcend into an undulating loop handle.

The sides of the shade with cross-shaped latticework, opposite from each other, are actually removable panels. These were used to open to a candle, but now the it is equipped with a newly electrified CE-fitting. No lamp bulbs included. When lit, the fine washi-paper gives a lovely warm glow.

The base of the columns are supported by scrolling ornaments, connecting to the square base with canted corners. The sides are slightly arched and supported by flat bracket feet. The front fitted with a drawer, which was used to store the matches and such. This one even has a decorative cover.

Height 79 cm, Width and Depth 29.5 cm.
Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912).

The washi-paper has been completely restored, and the frame itself is in a very good condition with some signs of wear conform age. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.

When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.

As this paper lamp shade is very delicate, we will make a custom wooden crate for transport.
