Rare and striking black lacquered wooden paper-enclosed lantern 行灯 (andon). The square lampshade sits on a thin stand with a simple stylized ornament. When lit, the fine washi-paper gives a lovely warm glow.
The facetted rectangular base has a loose cover with a hidden compartment underneath.

The lamp used to be lit by a candle, but now it is equipped with a electrified CE-fitting.

Meiji period (1868-1912)
The washi-paper has been completely restored, and the frame itself is in a very good condition with very minor traces of age. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
