Very beautiful, high quality and heavy black and gold lacquered wooden two-tiered writing table 文台 (bundai) with slightly arched edges, supported by four spreading feet.
The top decorated with fine polychrome hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief design) and takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief design) on a black ground, depicting a bridge crossing the Uji river 宇治川 in southeast Kyôto, surrounded by willows 柳 (yanagi). The embankment is protected by a stone-filled baskets, and next to it a waterwheel is turning in the stream.
Above this scene some translucent clouds with thick golden squares and rectangles.
