Suzuribako – calligraphy box & ryoshibako – letterbox

Set of 2 rare lacquered boxes (suzuribako – calligraphy box & ryoshibako – letterbox) decorated with a very high level of lacquerware in high relief with several Noh masks, all with a very strong expression: – Hannya – Hakushikijo and Beshimi.
On the inside of the suzuribako lacquered with several images decorated with the symbols of the Takasago couple: broom and rake with the pine tree and next to it a cart for a flower arrangement. These symbols refer to the Old Man and the Old Woman of Takasago from the Noh-piece of the same name. The old couple stands for a long and happy marriage. The hats are crowned with crane and turtle, symbols of long life.
The reverse side of the ryoshibako all over decorated with silver sprinkled lacquer. Both boxes have rims executed in silver.
The waterdropper made of silver with silver mark on its bottom.

With 2 individual wooden boxes. One marked with: “bunko-box with no-masks in makie-laquer”
Signed and dated on the transport box: Sôtetsu (= Sotetsu X 十代宗哲 1862-1926) – July Taisho 11 (1922).
All in very nice condition with some very very minor spots of age and use.
We did our very best making these pictures, but in reality the quality and detailing of the lacquer is much better.
When shipping we will add a certificate of authenticity.
