Exquisite writing box, Suzuri Bako, complete with ink-stone and water-dropper.
The outside black lacquered with a beautiful design of a blossoming apricot tree (Ume) in raised maki-e oxidized silver lacquer. The flowers in gold lacquer and and mother of pearl inlay work.
The inside of the box and lid beautifully executed with an exceptional fluid design in gold and black on an oxidized silver base.
In the recess where the ink-stone is placed the inscription: “Design by Ogata Korin”.
The very famous artist Ogata Kōrin: (Japanese: 尾形光琳; 1658 – June 2, 1716) was a Japanese painter, lacquer master and designer of the Rinpa school.
The ink-stone itself gold lacquered. The water-dropper in geometrical shaped black metal.
The lacquer is in very good condition with some minor signs of age and wear. Late Meiji early Taisho period.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
