Rinpa School-style suzuri’bako 硯箱 (writing box)

An exquisite Rinpa School-style suzuri’bako 硯箱 (writing box) of rectangular form with rounded corners and nashiji lacquer 梨子地 (sprinkled gold lacquer) on a dark red ground. The well-fitted cover decorated with a full camellia flower 椿 (tsubaki) with some pine tree branches 松 (matsu) executed in gold and dark brown takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer design) in the renowned style of the famous artist Ogata Kôrin 尾形光琳. Several of the flowerheads and -leaves inlaid with shiny white mother-of-pearl 螺鈿 (raden) and oxidized silver.

The reverse of the lid decorated with a slanting and curving tree trunk and an elegant blooming plum tree 梅 (ume), also executed in high quality lacquer in relief with inlaid raden.
The box with a fitted tray housing an inkstone 硯 (suzuri) and a silver waterdropper 水滴 (suiteki) shaped as moth resting on an accentuated leaf.

The entire interior, tray and bottom side done in the nashiji lacquer finished by golden fundame 粉溜地 (finely-ground gold powder) rims.

Including sumi ink block decorated with a deer design.

Height 5.8 cm, Width 23.4 cm, Depth 26.1 cm.
Period: Edo period (18th-19th century).

The box is in a very good condition with minimal traces consistent with age and use. Please look at the photos for a clear condition reference.
