Superb rectangular black lacquer tebako 手箱 (box for personal accessories) with a slightly domed well-fitted lid.
The lid has a continuous soft-tone multicoloured hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) depicting several picture books 絵本 (e-hon), of which two lie open and show flowers accompanied by poems. The three other booklets have beautifully decorated covers, one of which has a chidori 千鳥 (plovers) flying above sea. The motif continuous on the sides, showing the cover with a pine tree and waterfall design, and the tip of another book with a wheel and foliage design.
The interior with a fitted removable tray. This tray and the entire interior of the box including lid are decorated with a warm reddish golden nashiji 梨子地 (sprinkled gold lacquer).
