Exquisite lacquered suzuri bako

A magnificent suzuri’bako 硯箱 (writing box) of rare high rectangular form on a short spreading foot.

The top of the cover with a shaped sunken panel bearing a wood ground finely decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer design) as well as gold foil with a prancing shishi 獅子 (temple lion) rearing its head toward a fluttering butterfly蝶 (chô). The lion well detailed with scrolling tail and mane as well as reverse-painted glass eyes.

The exterior neatly incised with a floral lozenge diaper finished with recessed gold fundame edges 粉溜地 (matt lacquer). The front with a metal-handled drawer.

The interior of the cover bearing a roiro-mura-nashiji ground decorated with a leafy peony spray with elegantly furled petals, crafted from inlaid silver and gold takamaki-e.

The interior of the box bearing a richly gold, red, and silver-sprinkled roiro ground. The baseboard fitted with a rectangular inkstone 硯 (suzuri) and silver waterdropper 水滴 (suiteki) in the form of a butterfly.

Height 13.5 cm, Width 14.4 cm, Depth 24.8 cm.
Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period).

The box is in a good condition with some minor traces of wear consistent with age and use, flaking and losses to lacquer and gold foil, particularly to the shishi’s back, minor age cracks, and slack of rim butterfly fitting. Please look at the photos for a clear condition reference.
